Laikien completed her master of occupational therapy practice at La Trobe University in Australia. She is a registered occupational therapist with AHPRA Australia and AHPC Singapore, and eligible for NBCOT US registration. She has 3 years of clinical experience working in hospital, centre-based, community and school settings with children and adults. She has several years of experience working with children form ages 0-12 as a nanny and teaching English.
For over a year, Laikien has been working for a non-for profit organisation. She has experience working with children with various diagnoses (physical, neurological, and intellectual). Her therapy services entailed sensory, handwriting, equipment, home modifications, building independence with activities of daily living, and motor skill development.
Previously, Laikien worked in a hospital setting and specialized in pain management rehab. Her skillset gained from this role had a particular focus on stress management and functional movement. She worked with adults to help them achieve their goals and take control of their lives again.
Laikien is passionate about her role as an occupational therapist. She believes that therapy should be fun and engaging. She aims to work with the child and family in setting goals and choosing therapy tasks to achieve those goals. She understands the importance of working with the family of the child as the family know their child best, and they are best able to support the child with achieving their goals. She strides to provide the knowledge and support needed to the family and the child so that they can be empowered in their journey.
Laikien is continually looking at building her own skillset and knowledge through professional development, and attends both webinars and workshops to do this. She aspires to go for her PhD in the future.
