Enrich Learning and Communication skills through Occupational Therapy
W-sitting: where a child sits on the floor with their bottom between their legs, and their legs facing away from the body, thus forming a “W” shape on the floor.
This position is seen when a baby transitions from crawling to sitting. Young children use this posture as it provides a wider base of support, thus giving the child stability. However, in this posture, the core muscles are denied the practice of adjusting to lateral weight shifts. This posture is commonly seen in children with low muscle tone, and these children also tend to have hypermobile joints.
The ligaments around the hips are lax and provide less joint stability than children with normal muscle tone. Sitting in this way, these children have to use less effort to stay upright, contributing to a vicious cycle of core weakness. As the use of core muscles is integral to efficient equilibrium reactions, these children also tend to have poorer balance and postural reactions, when compared to their peers. In the long term, children who W-sit also develop a poor posture known as sway back, and tend to walk with feet turned inwards. This contributes to tightness in the hamstrings and lower back muscles.
Hence, it is vital to correct W-sitting as soon as possible.

Motor Development: Milestone in Children
These might be some of the questions that many parents have in mind. As a parent, you may also think that every child learns at his or her own pace and he and she will eventually catch up with peers. However, how do parents really know if your child has signs of motor developmental delay?

Quick Tips
Tips
  • Model a different way of sitting for your child. For example, sitting cross legged, or side sitting.
  • Owl Tips
  • Work on trunk rotation – ask your child to lie on the back with knees bent towards chest, ask your child to slowly rotate the legs from side to side.
  • Supervise your child. Ask your child to sit on a yoga ball. Get your child to life one leg off the floor, and then the other for balance.
  • Ask your child to kneel on the floor, with hands under shoulders and knees under hips. Ask your child to life one leg and balance on two arms and remaining leg. Then lift the opposite arm. Switch sides.
